Name Contest

Nā Pua Ha`aheo o Manokalanipō

(The proud children of Manokalanipō)

Names are important.  Hawaiian thinking and tradition taught us that one’s name is “a kind of force in its own right” (Mary Kawena Pūkui).  Today, we invite the children of Kaua`i and Ni`ihau to use Hawaiian tradition and thinking to select names for the Hawaiian monk seal pups recently born on the east side of Kaua`i.

NOTE:  Applicants are encouraged to get assistance from guardians, family, friends, kūpuna, or kumu in their application and statement.  The guardian must disclose who the applicant received assistance from and how much assistance the applicant received.  We recognize that since this contest is open to students of different ages, some students may require more assistance than others.

$100 cash grand prize (one for each seal)

10 honorary awards (monk seal prize packs, 5 for each seal)


Applications will be judged by a panel of experts (to be named).


Finding Balance

Nā Mea Hulu is a project by Honua Consulting, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The goal is to find ways to protect the dwindling monk seal population without impacting the practices and livelihoods of Hawaiians and fisherman.
